The New Digital Casteism
In India, caste has long been a deeply entrenched social divider — favoring the privileged and excluding the marginalized. Today, as artificial intelligence (AI) becomes part of our everyday lives, we risk replicating that same unfair system through algorithms. If we are not careful, AI could become the new "digital caste system" — reinforcing inequality, ignoring the underprivileged, and serving only the elite.
Bias in, Bias out: The Invisible Code of Prejudice
AI systems are trained on data. If the data reflects society’s existing biases — such as unequal access to healthcare, education, or employment — then the AI learns those same patterns. In India, this often means that people from disadvantaged castes, rural areas, or poorer backgrounds are underrepresented in the data. So what happens? AI begins to serve the groups it knows — urban, English-speaking, digitally active populations — and overlooks the rest.
For example, an AI tool trained mostly on urban patient records may not understand the symptoms or conditions more common in rural or tribal areas. A hiring algorithm built on resumes of past employees may favor dominant caste names and reject equally capable candidates from marginalized backgrounds. These are not just bugs — they are systemic failures waiting to happen.
From Bias to Barrier: How AI Can Deepen Inequality
Unchecked, AI bias can deepen the gap between those who already have access and those who do not. Just like caste, it can silently divide — deciding who gets a loan, who qualifies for a job, or who receives proper medical care. The danger is that AI makes these decisions seem neutral or scientific, when in fact they may be just as biased as any human.
This digital divide could become permanent. If marginalized communities are not included in the design, data, and testing of AI systems, they will be locked out of the benefits — and worse, they may suffer the consequences of biased decisions made against them.
How to Break the Cycle: Toward Ethical and Inclusive AI
To prevent AI from becoming casteist, we must act now:

Diversify DataAI needs to be trained on data that represents all groups — rural and urban, rich and poor, all castes, all languages. This means going beyond what's easy to find and intentionally seeking out data from underrepresented communities.

Inclusive Design TeamsThe teams building AI tools should include people from diverse backgrounds, including those who understand the realities of marginalized communities. Only then can the tools reflect lived experiences.

Bias Audits and AccountabilityEvery AI system must be regularly tested for bias. Just as we have audits for financial systems, we need audits for fairness and inclusivity. If bias is found, there must be a process to correct it — not just report it.

Empower the Marginalized to LeadAI should not be imposed on communities — it should be shaped with them. By training young people from underprivileged backgrounds in AI literacy, we can create a new generation of ethical AI leaders who build with empathy.
A Moral Responsibility
India has the opportunity to lead the world in creating ethical, inclusive AI — but only if we face the truth. Caste-based bias doesn’t end with people. It can live in code, datasets, and algorithms. Ignoring it means repeating history. Acknowledging it means we have the power to break the pattern.
