The Cheapest Space Missions Myth: How the Government Sells Incomplete Numbers as Glory


The government keeps repeating one claim again and again:  

“India’s space missions are the cheapest in the world.”


They say Chandrayaan cost less than a Hollywood film.  

They say Mangalyaan was done on a shoestring budget.  

They say ISRO is a model of frugal engineering that the whole world should learn from.


If this were completely true, the world would be standing in queue for Indian launches.  

SpaceX would not have risen the way it has.  

Private companies and countries would be rushing to India instead of booking flights with Elon Musk.


But look at what is actually happening.

SpaceX launches far more frequently. It reuses rockets. It has brought the cost per kilogram down sharply through scale and reusability. Countries and companies prefer it because the real commercial cost is lower and the reliability is high.

India’s claim of being the cheapest rests on incomplete accounting.  

Salaries of scientists and engineers are lower.  

Many costs of long-term infrastructure, research, failed attempts, and institutional overheads are not fully loaded onto individual mission figures.  

Insurance is often not taken.  

The true cost to the public exchequer is never placed clearly in front of the people.

A recent study has even shown that when measured by cost per kilogram to orbit, Indian launches rank among the most expensive among major space-faring nations. The government and ISRO dispute such findings, but the larger point remains: if Indian launches were truly the most economical and efficient in the commercial sense, the global market would have reflected it long ago.


This is the same pattern seen elsewhere.  


In banks, big loans are written off and the public is told it is only an accounting entry.  

In education, empty events and policies are sold as revolutionary reform.  

In politics, film stars sell screen image as leadership.  

In space too, selective numbers are presented, and people are asked to feel proud without examining the full picture.

Low published mission costs do not automatically mean highest efficiency or best value.  

They can also mean lower scale, limited reusability, restricted commercial demand, and costs that are distributed across the larger public system in ways that are never fully shown.


The people are told to clap for every launch and every press release.  

They are rarely encouraged to ask:  

If it is truly the cheapest and best, why is the world not choosing it in large numbers?  

Why has a private American company overtaken the narrative of cost and frequency?


Pride is good.  

Blind acceptance of government claims is not.

As long as people keep celebrating selective numbers without demanding full transparency on costs, capabilities, and commercial competitiveness, the same style of storytelling will continue — in space, in banks, in education, and in politics.

Wake up.  

A low figure on a press release is not the same as true economy.  

And repeated claims of being the cheapest do not become true just because they are repeated.
