The Face on Your Screen Is Lying for a Living

A familiar voice. A known face. A promise of easy money.

That is not politics anymore. That is code wearing a politician’s skin.

This week, offices from opposition and ruling circles alike had to warn the public: AI deepfakes of their leaders are circulating on WhatsApp and Instagram, pitching “investments.” The same script has already used other famous faces — finance ministers, chief ministers, industrialists — to drain bank accounts. One ex-serviceman lost nearly ₹47 lakh after a fake Modi ad for “Quantum AI.” A nurse lost lakhs to a Ratan Tata deepfake. A businessman was hit by a fake Nirmala Sitharaman pitch. Different parties. Same scam.

Technology did not invent greed. It industrialised it.

Here is the ugly twin truth. Scammers steal the face. Politicians still fight for the feed. Ruling party IT cells flood timelines with triumph. Opposition war rooms flood them with outrage. Both hire emotion. Both treat young minds as vote batteries, not citizens. The deepfake just finishes the job: it proves a face on a screen proves nothing.

Students, watch the pattern. First comes the familiar face. Then the urgency. Then the private link. Then the “guaranteed” return. Then the blocked withdrawal. That is not a glitch. That is the product.

Critical thinking checklist — four questions before you click:

1. Would this person announce a money scheme only on a random reel, never on a verified handle?
2. Who profits if you feel fear, greed, or loyalty in the next ten seconds?
3. Can the claim be checked on an official site, a regulator page, a real newsroom — or only inside a WhatsApp group?
4. If the face vanished, would the pitch still make sense?

India’s cyber helpline is 1930. Evidence matters: screenshots, UPI IDs, links, chat logs. But the better defence is upstream. Stop treating a politician’s face as a seal of truth. Ruling side or opposition side — the camera lies when someone pays for the lie.

Phones fold. Faces forge. Propaganda scales.

The next viral clip will look more real than the last. The next party post will feel more urgent than the last. The only upgrade that matters is not a foldable screen. It is a mind that refuses to outsource judgment to a thumbnail.
