A Fake AI Video Was Shared as Real. Now There Is a Police Case.
What happened?
Senior Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan posted a video on X. It seemed to show Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov saying India is only a trading partner with no say on issues like Ukraine. The video was fake, made with AI.
Who said it was fake?
India's Ministry of External Affairs fact-checked it as fake. The Russian Embassy in India warned people not to circulate "silly AI fakes."
What did Bhushan do?
He deleted the post. He said he had checked it with an AI tool and thought it was genuine.
What did the police do?
Delhi Police's Special Cell registered an FIR against him. It invokes laws on forgery, defamation, public mischief and the IT Act. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said Bhushan has a pattern of sharing unverified claims that hurt India's image.
So who is wrong here?
Start with the share. A famous lawyer, followed by lakhs, pushed a clip that fit his story about the government. He trusted it because he liked what it said. That is the oldest trap in propaganda. Critics of the ruling party cannot demand truth from power and then forward fakes themselves.
Is the ruling side clean then?
No. Doctored clips and edited quotes have flown from ruling-party supporters too, often without any FIR. When the law moves fast for critics and slowly for friends, people stop trusting the law. A deleted post and a public correction should be answered with facts first, not only with police sections and labels like "anti-India."
Can an AI tool tell me a video is real?
Not reliably. Detection tools can be wrong. A tool is a hint, not a verdict. The real check is the source: did the person say this on an official channel, in a full recorded event, reported by more than one credible outlet?
What should a student do before sharing a clip?
Find the original. Find the date and the event. Check the official account of the person shown. Notice if the clip makes you feel smart or angry very fast. Fast feelings are a warning sign.
Why does this matter to me?
Today it is a minister's face. Tomorrow it can be your face, your teacher's, your mother's. Fake videos are cheap now. Your judgment is the last filter.
If a fake video agreed with everything you believe, would you check it, or would you share it first?
