Delhi Air Pollution: Check the Date and Source
Delhi’s air needs action. Not an old screenshot dressed as today’s emergency. Not a party caption pretending to be a pollution report.
On November 8, Diwali morning, The Indian Express reported a Delhi-wide Air Quality Index of 384, citing the Central Pollution Control Board. It described the city’s air as “very poor”. Several monitoring stations were above 400. That is a report of a morning snapshot, not a promise about the whole day.[1]
The 389 figure in the earlier draft belonged to November 6 at 8 AM IST, as reported by Business Today.[2] Two days matter. A reading without its date can mislead even when the number itself is genuine.
Keep the city average separate from a neighbourhood reading. Keep an index separate from a pollutant concentration. A large number on a graphic is not enough. Ask what was measured, where, and when.
Now confront the blame game. Pollution can involve emissions from vehicles, industry, dust, crop-residue burning and firecrackers, while weather affects how pollutants disperse. Reporting ahead of Diwali warned about the combination of seasonal burning, festival emissions and unfavourable weather.[2] That does not establish the exact contribution of each source on November 8.
Do not invent those shares. Do not turn a photograph of smoke into a source-apportionment study. A politician naming a neighbouring state has not, by that statement alone, measured the air.
Those responsible for enforcement must explain their actions. Critics should test those explanations against evidence. These are different responsibilities. Accountability does not require pretending that every side has equal power or equal blame.
Before sharing, ask four questions:
- When was this reading taken? Find the date and time. Do not pass November 6 off as November 8.
- What does the number describe? Check whether it is a city average, a station index or a pollutant concentration.
- Where is the evidence for the claimed source? Look for a dated study or model, its method and its limits. A confident caption is not a measurement.
- What action is being checked? Ask the responsible authority for the rule, implementation record and result, rather than accepting another accusation.
Students, keep the anger if it drives careful questions. Drop the shortcut that makes evidence optional. Reject unsupported claims even when they flatter a favourite leader.
When a pollution post reaches your phone, will you check the date and source before helping it reach another child’s family?
